Remembrance Day

Ms.'s Video

We are so fortunate to have Ms. Hepworth who creates such a moving Remembrance Day Assembly that leaves us with hope and reminds us about our past. Truly moving. Here is a short clip of the highlights. I was proud of the 3 students that read at the assembly.

A Note About Math......

Dear Parents,

Please find attached a subtraction grid that shows you all the facts that your child knows so far this year. Subtraction can be a difficult concept for kids to understand. We have played some subtraction games and explored different strategies to help your child learn their basic subtraction facts.

We are now moving on to learn addition facts. We have been playing some online fact games, learning some new strategies but mostly I am hoping that the children will anchor their new learning onto the subtraction facts they already know.

We are starting with reviewing double facts. Below is a list of doubles that your child should know:
2+2                      10+10                    50+50
3+3                      11+11                     60+60
4+4                      12+12                    70+70
5+5                      15+15                    80+80
6+6                      20+20                   90+90
7+7                      25+25                   100+100
8+8                      30+30
9+9                      40+40

We will then move on to the Commutative Property. Another name that you may know if “Fact Families.”
Here is an example using the number 5,7 and 12.
5+7=12                           12-7=5
7+5=12                           12-5=7
This is a very powerful strategy. It links subtraction and addition together and it uses a flip of numbers to get the same answer.

I encourage families to play cards, math games or visit math websites to support your child’s learning.

Thank you,

Ms. L. Romeo J

Social Studies Project 2014

Dear Parents,

Our class is once again busy working on Social Studies Projects. Our topic is to select and research about a province or territory. We have created the criteria together for the children to follow. We have used technology and print sources to find information, print maps and gather other information needed to complete our project.

The children have really improved in their ability to gather information and put it into their own words.
All of the research is done in class so I may make observations and assist children as they are researching.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Take care,

Ms. L. Romeo J

Social Studies Test October 21

Dear Parents,

This is a note to let you know that we will be having a “Map of Canada” test. We have been learning about the names of the provinces and territories in Canada. I am asking that the children practice the map that I sent home the other day. As a challenge, the children can also label the capital cities in Canada. I will have the names listed of the provinces and territories for the children to use. It is not a spelling test but a labelling test. The test is one Tuesday October 21.

Here is a map to help with the studying!

Writing Project in Ms.Romeo's Class

Writing Project in Ms.Romeo's Class

Here is snapshot video of an exciting project that was in my classroom.

At Harold Hatcher School, we are fortunate to have many "experts" who share their knowledge with others.

Ms. Rempel and Ms. Veryha worked in my classroom on the student's autobiographies. It was an exciting process. I am very proud of the writing that each student created! You will see these pieces at Student-Led conference time!

Important Dates

Hi all,
There will be no school on Friday October 24. There is also early dismissal on November 5 at 2:35.
Thank you,
Ms. L. Romeo :)

Kidblog Coming Soon

Tomorrow, our class will start blogging. I have chosen a very safe and secure site called "Kidblog."
Each student will be given their own safe and private password that both parents and student can use at home and at school.
I am using "Kidblog" to help students with writing, homework and as a way of sharing their ideas from home.
I will sharing this site tomorrow at school and I will be giving each student their own password to use at home if they wish.
Research shows that students who write on an electronic device improve in their writing ability. I hope that using "Kidblog" will improve student writing as well.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Take care,
Ms. L. Romeo :)

Thanksgiving Letter To Parents

Dear Parents,

Today, Ms. Romeo read a book about Thanksgiving. We learned that some people cannot afford food. We want to help those people.

We, as a class, are going to collect food for the Transcona Food Bank. We are collecting healthy and non-perishable food items. We will be collecting food between October 6 until October 9.

Please help our class collect food and help others.

Welcome Back

Dear Parents,
The school year is off and running! It seems like the summer holidays were so far away!

I would like to share what we have started learning.  In Math, we have starting learning about Place Value and Subtraction strategies. Problem solving is always part of our learning. I ask that parents support their child by playing the math games that I send home and visiting math websites. If you have any questions about my math program, please let me know.

In Science, we are learning about "Habitats and Communities." We are exploring different habitats and we will visit a local Wetland in our very own Transcona Community!

In Social Studies, we are learning about Canada. We will start by exploring some basic facts about Canada. The children will learn about provinces, territories and topographic regions.

In English Language Arts, we are learning the building blocks for a balanced literacy program. This includes a word study, writing study and reading study. There is also exploration of speaking and listening skills. I only have researched based ELA programs in my classroom that have proven successful with various types of learners.

We are also starting French, Health, Art and computer studies this term. What a lot of exciting opportunities to learn!

I look forward to an exciting year ahead. Please know that my door is always open!
Take care,
Ms. L. Romeo :)

Multiplication Facts

Hi there,
Today I will be sending home a letter that is attached to a multiplication grid. Your child has highlighted all the facts that they know. I am asking that you support your child in learning the rest of the multiplication facts they need to know.

Here is the letter.

Dear Parents,

Please find attached a multiplication grid. On it, I have highlighted all the facts that your child knows. The Grade 4 Math Curriculum expects students in grade 4 to have a solid understanding of facts up to 5 X5. They also should be able to figure out facts to 9X9 using various math tools.

I am asking you to support your child with learning their math facts that they do not know. This can be done by playing multiplication games that I have sent home and visiting math websites that can be found on my blog.

Each week, I will be checking to see if your child has improved.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at lromeo@retsd.mb.ca

Thank you for your support,

Ms. L. Romeo J

Home Writing Week 2

Dear Parents,

For Week 2 of “Home Writing”, your child is encouraged to write for about 3 to 5 minutes about what they notice at home.  They are to write down their observations in their home reading notebook.  We have written a similar assignment at school.  This assignment encourages children to notice sounds, smells and what people are doing using words to describe their observations.

We will be sharing these observations on THURSDAY.

Thank you,

Ms. L. Romeo

Read Acroos Canada Continues

Dear Parents,
Please know that "Read Across Canada" continues! We have not reached our class goal. Every page counts. If you lost your booklets, please write the title of book read and number of pages read in their agenda.
Thank you!

Home Writing Starts!

Hi all,
The children will continue to work on their writing skills at home. Our first home writing activity was sent home yesterday. It is an interview. The children will have home writing for the entire month of January. The homework assignment goes home MONDAY and returned each THURSDAY. It is a good way to practice writing skills taught in class at home! Please find the assignment below.
I look forward to see who your child selected to interview!!!

INTERVIEW

Your first home writing assignment is for you to find someone to interview.  An interview is a way to get to know someone better.  You will record the information on this sheet.  You are required to ask the questions provided and record their answers.  You are encouraged to ask more questions on the back of this sheet.  You can interview a friend, relative or someone that you are interested to learn more about such as a coach or a teacher.
